Rugadh agus tógadh Máire Ní Chlochartaigh i Mhaínis ach chaith sí a saol pósta i Leitir Calaidh. Nuair a tháinig uair a báis, áfach, chuir sí in iúl go láidir ina amhrán cumhachtach gur mhaith léi a bheith curtha i Maínis i measc a muintire. Ar mhí-ámharaí an tsaoil bhí an aimsir chomh dona nuair a fuair sí bás nárbh fhéidir a cónra a chur ar bhád. Tá sí curtha i Leitir Calaidh. Bhí cáil na filíochta ar a deartháir Micil Dhiarmada Ó Clochartaigh, nó File Leitir Calaidh, mar a thugtaí air, chomh maith. Ceapann daoine áirithe gurb é a deartháir a chum Amhrán Mhaínse ina hainm. Bealach amháin nó bealach eile, tá léiriú fíorláidir ann ar an ngrá, ar an gcumha agus ar saol an phobail agus is ceann de amhráin mhóra Chonamara é go cinnte. Tá an t-amhrán á chasadh anseo ag Máire Ní Mhaoláin a bhfuil gaol aici le Máire agus Micil Ó Clochartaigh.

Máire Ní Chlochartaigh was born and raised in Maínis, but spent her married life in Leitir Calaidh. But on her deathbed, however, she strongly expressed in this powerful song the desire to be buried in Maínis among her family. Unfortunately the weather was so bad when she passed away that it was not possible to place her coffin on a boat. She is buried in Leitir Calaidh. Her brother Micil Dhiarmada Ó Clochartaigh was also a renowned poet, he was known locally as the Leitir Calaidh Poet. Some believe that it was her brother that wrote Amhrán Mhaínse. Although we cannot be sure either way, there is no doubting the themes of love, homesickness and community which are expressed so intensely in the song and it stands out as one of the great songs of Conamara.
